Our Premier
Our Minister of Affordability and Utilities
Last year, Alberta led the way into the future, with over 90% of Canada’s new wind, solar and energy storage additions! This is billions in investment, thousands of good jobs, and lower energy costs. Then Danielle Smith halted all momentum with a surprise ban on new renewable energy projects for 7 months. The decision was made with no input from Albertans or business owners.
But she didn’t stop there, on Feb 29th Smith announced new rules that lock up new projects in red tape that will:
- Scare off billions more in investments
- Lose tens of thousands of jobs
- Cost municipalities hundreds of millions in lost revenue per year
- Hand our electricity market to a few gas companies to further raise electricity prices
- Take away landowner decision-making
These rules go way beyond oil and gas rules. This is an attack on our economy and cost-of-living.
Despite major concerns raised by many Albertans, Smith has wasted our dollars on unhelpful fights with Ottawa and campaigns like “Tell the Feds,” while also rolling back progress on energy diversification.
This is not the leadership we need.
We need our leaders to prioritize what truly matters: creating good jobs, reducing the cost of living, and enhancing the quality of life for Albertans.
Our Province has an incredible advantage with the highest potential for renewable energy in Canada.
But Danielle Smith’s actions have put us at a DISADVANTAGE, costing us:
- Over 100 projects
- $33 billion in investment
- 24,000 jobs
- Substantial savings in household energy expenses
Now the costs will continue to grow, and investors will go elsewhere, until the new rules are reversed.
Urge our government to reconsider these rules and focus on regaining the Alberta Advantage with policies that move Alberta forward, ensuring a prosperous future for all.
There are legitimate concerns about the growth of the renewable energy sector, particularly by rural Albertans. These could have been addressed effectively without first banning all new projects for 7 months and putting more than 76% of Southern Alberta off-limits. Bans on innovation and investment are not the answer.
